Presell like a pro

The number one strategy to increase your affiliate sales is preselling.

Before we begin, we need to first define what preselling is. There are two components to it – art & science. And it’s function is to prepare your reader to buy something. Then when they’re ready, refer them to the product website so they can buy it. If you do it well, it’s completely invisible.

In a nutshell, you provide value. And give them a link to the product you’re preselling. In just a minute, I’ll explain exactly how to presell. First, it’s important to understand why we do it. Here are a few benefits of preselling:

It helps your reader trust you – And gaining the trust of your readers helps them want to click your links. Which obviously means you’ll make more sales.
Preselling is disarming – When you’re not hyping or pitching a product, your reader lets their guard down. This means they are more open to what you’re saying. So your content get absorbed.
It preps them to buy – Your readers are now receiving your message. So they become more receptive to other messages. This includes the sales website you send them to! Being open to a sales message is what it means being in a buying mood.
You make more money – You’ve prepped them and referred them in the right state of mind. With the guard down and trusting your recommendation. The only possible result is more sales!
Your customers are happier – Plus, they feel they’ve made the buying decision on their own. Instead of feeling pressured or “sold”. And this leads to greater satisfaction with the product.

Now you know whey preselling is critical. And I hope you’re resolved to being preselling, too. So, it’s time to break down how it works. As I mentioned earlier, it’s both an art and a science.

Mastering the art

The first step is in getting your readers to trust you and open up. This can only be accomplished by providing actual value in the information you’re presenting. The art of this is to provide enough information to be of value, but not enough to satiate the hunger. That is, they have to be wanting more when you refer them to the product sales page for the product you’re trying to sell. And since they’re more open, they are more likely to make a purchase.

The science component

There are also several key elements that need to be included.

One of these key elements is the presentation of the information. You’ve got to map out your strategy before you start writing. In the end, you want to sell a specific product. There are two ways to accomplish this with great content. The first method is to provide enough info to get them started, but not enough to finish. The other method is to explain all the details and expose how difficult it is to do what you’re explaining. Whichever method, you send them to a product website that solves the problem you just created.

You also have to link to the product you’re promoting discretely. You have directly to the home page of the product. This increases your clicks. But, without your affiliate link, how do you get credit? This is all part of the science of preselling. You use an image tag to cookie your reader before they leave your site.

Next, you want to make sure you’re linking on related words and phrases. Hyperlinked words are clicked more than anything else. Plus, if you link on relevant words, it only makes sense to click on there.

Putting all of this together creates a powerful affiliate marketing formula for success.

Now for the bad news…

This process is not easy – at all! Let’s look at the skills required to pull it off: Good content. The entire process depends on your being able to provide useful information to your readers. Which means you need to be both knowledgable on the subject and capable of writing a high-quality article. Writing to presell. First, you have to give good information. And you have to make the content accessible in order to provide value. While at the same time making them want more. Or make the information so overwhelming they realize they can’t do it on their own.

Product selection. After that you have to figure out which products you want to promote. If you can manage to get the article written well. All your efforts are wasted if you send your reader to the wrong sales letter.

Technical skills. And finally, you need the technical know-how to embed your image tag and make sure you get credit for the sale. This is pretty easy – you just make a 1 pixel X 1 pixel image with no border and make the “source” of the image your affiliate link. (Just don’t mess it up. Otherwise, you won’t get credit for your sales.)
